Jack-o-Lantern Spectacular

October 17, 2010 by Dennis

These photos were taken at the Jack-o-Lantern Spectacular at Roger Williams Zoo.  The featured pumpkins are painted with black ink on the outside and carved on the inside to allow differing amounts of light to shine through the pumpkin.  Hundreds of traditionally carved pumpkins also line the walkway and fill in the spaces around pumpkins decorated following the theme for the year.

Hummingbirds to jack-o-lanterns! The kids went to see the pumpkins a couple of nights ago, I passed considering the walk and the crowds. I’m sure you had fun. The last one is the moodiest and one probably the most scary looking one.

Seeing is Believing

While mostly true, occasionally the eye can be fooled. This appears to be an earthworm on some leaf litter. It is. But the worm is four feet long and 1-2 inches in diameter. Photographed in Sumaco, Ecuador.
