Fall Color in Rhode Island

October 17, 2010 by Dennis

The leaves are changing and there’s no predicting where it will be good color, or when.  For the first time ever I ventured into western RI to find locations for fall color photography.  All of these images used High Dynamic Range techniques to capture the highlight and shadow detail in the high contrast situations.  While I definitely needed this technique for cases where the scene was in a dark location (graveyard, stream) and it was backlit, I tried it on reflected light scenes to see if it made a difference and to get some experience in processing those types of images.  The first two images were taken on 8 October at Carbuncle Pond, and the others were taken on or near the Scituate Reservoir on 13 October.

The firs one is (almost) my favorite. I like it a lot more when I cover the left side to make the pier go to the left corner, and cover the top to leave only the reflections of the trees and the sky at the top. It makes, for me, a very nice panoramic format that tickles the imagination.

Seeing is Believing

While mostly true, occasionally the eye can be fooled. This appears to be an earthworm on some leaf litter. It is. But the worm is four feet long and 1-2 inches in diameter. Photographed in Sumaco, Ecuador.
